Looking for a quick, fuss-free and inexpensive place to have dinner in town? Look no further, we have a great recommendation here for you! Tucked away in a corner of Takashimaya’s Food Hall at Basement 2, Nakajima Suisan Grilled Fish Restaurant can probably be considered a hidden find. There, you can expect to find delicious grilled fish sets (served with rice, salad and miso soup) that are priced reasonably between $10-20, depending on the type of fish you order.

I was attracted to the Saba Mirin Set ($11.50, picture above) because I thought it was rather unique. After all, most places only serve grilled fish with salt, teriyaki or miso sauce. The fish didn’t disappoint as it was sufficiently fresh – its flesh detached from the bones easily. The sweetness from the mirin marinade also offered an interesting twist to the fish (different from the usual salt-based seasonings) and I really enjoyed it. My only gripe? There were too many bones in the fish, making it difficult to eat. I’ll probably choose a less bony fish next time.

Mero Saikyo (Grilled cod fish in Saikyo miso sauce)

SG Boy picked the Mero Saikyo Set ($16.50), which was basically a grilled cod fish seasoned with Saikyo miso sauce.  Compared to my saba fish, I’d say that this is a much better choice. The fish was similarly fresh and had a buttery melt-in-the-mouth texture. Probably one of the better grilled fish that we’ve tasted in Singapore!

The side salad, dressed in a tangy wafu sauce, was extremely refreshing and paired well with the grilled fish.

To be honest, we weren’t expecting much because it was a small eatery that looked rather unassuming from the outside. However, we both agreed that the food at Nakajima Suisan surpassed our expectations, and that we’d probably have to pay a much higher price for the same quality elsewhere. Lesson learnt? Never judge a eatery by its entrance! If you’re a huge fan of grilled fish, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t visit this place! ;)

Overall Rating: 3.78/5 cod fish!
